Our homework this week in Maya was to follow a Lynda tutorial and replicate the furniture which was made. Much of the time when modeling, I've learned that it is best to stick to the original as much as possible unless given specific instruction to use creativity to deviate from the design. This was one of the cases which was best to try and make it look like the original furniture so in a realistic scene it would be believable.
I modeled the pieces to the specified sizes. It was fairly easy as most of the shapes are very simple. The only time I had problems was the back of the curved chair. I couldn't get the bend tool to work properly when selecting vertices. It took me a while to sort out. I had to freeze transformations, delete history and restart Maya and finally the bend tool would work along the correct vertices.
After creating all the primitives I unwrapped all the UV's. I cut where necessary and used 'move and sew' to get all the correct items in the correct places. After that it was time to follow the tutorial again for making original wood textures. I was really amazed at how such simple techniques can create an effect that on a model can look real, well almost. Here is my wood texture:
So after that I re-sized and positioned all my UV's into the correct areas in the 0-1 area in Maya with the texture in place to get a realistic look. Here are the final objects modeled and textured.
